Who should I send my resume to for a job at a magazine?
I am graduating in May with a BA in journalism, and have been applying to tons of jobs, both in book and magazine publishing, since March, but I still havent heard from anyone. Ive sent my resume to Human Resources of a major magazine publishing company, human resources of some book publishers, and also to whatever posted jobs i find. Is there a specific person on a magazine masthead that I should also send my resume to? Should I send it to the assistants, or someone higher up?
I have been a magazine editor for years.
First of all, don’t send anything to HR unless you’re responding to an ad. That won’t lead to anything. Contact editors. As others have suggested, freelancing is a good way to start. When I’ve hired staff, I’ve first looked to freelancers. Also, it gives you clips you can show to other editors who may be hiring staff. So first ask about freelancing opportunities.
Go to mediabistro.com and journalismjobs.com, two great places to find jobs, at all levels.
