Singapore Zoo -this 28-hectare zoo has often been said as being one of the most beautiful zoos in the world. An average of 1.4 million visitors pass through its gates annually. -The Zoo’s exhibits are considered by most to be of the highest international standards. The noteworthy exhibits are listed below with descriptions.
1)Primates – the Zoo has a varied collection of monkeys, apes and lemurs. Most of them are housed on spacious outdoor islands, with some even allowed to free-range. Some of the rarest monkeys in the world can be seen here such as the gaudily-coloured douc langur, bred only in a handful of zoos.
2)Fragile Forest – opened only in late-1998, it is one of the best designed zoo exhibits I have ever seen. The exhibit highlights tropical rainforests and their inhabitants; animals, plants and even humans (primitive forest people from New Guinea), and is divided into 2 sections: an indoor discovery centre with static displays and small, invertebrate exhibits; and a spectacular outdoor flight area. The outdoor flight area is really quite a sight. It is basically a large aviary-like structure, about 15 metres high, 60 metres long and 25 metres wide. You can walk through this area and feel like you’re in a real rainforest. Its inhabitants are free-ranging, many come right up to you. In this man-made but surprisingly realistic rainforest you can find fruit bats, mousedeer, tree kangaroos, sloths, tamanduas, parrots, tree ducks, pigeons and the conspicuous ruffed lemurs co-existing peacefully. Fluttering all around are some 1000 butterflies. Although the inhabitants are free-ranging, the thick vegetation can conceal animals very well, so be patient and keep a sharp eye, and you will be rewarded with a memorable experience. A definite must-see.
3) Free-ranging animals – this zoo is truly wild; besides the many birds like peacocks, guinea fowl, ibis and storks that fly free, there are also many primate species runnning ‘wild’ around the zoo grounds. The endangered tamarins are delightful to watch, more so when they are just inches away. The problem is that some visitors can’t resist feeding them despite many signs put up telling visitors not to. There are also langurs, spider monkeys and lemurs roaming freely.
4) Underwater Displays – showcasing animals ranging from polar bears to pygmy hippos to crocodiles to sea lions and mantees. They give you an opportunity to see what the animals do underwater.
5) Children’s World – great place for kids. There you can touch and feed all array of farm animals. Lots of play equipment for kids including a shallow wading pool.
6) Proboscis Monkeys – a controversial display as this species has never done well in captivity before. All other zoo collections of this animal have died except for the ones at the NY Bronx Zoo (which by the way is also an excellent zoo). But it seems that the zoo has done something right because the monkeys have not only survived but are thriving well with 4 babies born and all doing well since arriving in1997. Bronx Zoo has also bred this endangered primate but few if none of the young survived.
