How can I use a college football team logo on a product without infringing on copyrights etc.?
I have an idea for a product using a college team logo and want to produce it but don’t want to get into any legal trouble for infringement or anything like that. What is the proper procedure that I need to take in order to manufacture my product with permission of the school? How do I go about getting permission? Is there typically a percentage paid to the school or organization?
Simple, see if the school have a Public Relations Department. If not, talk to the athletic department directly, and see who handles licensing. Then arrange an interview where you convince them that your product is a good idea for them. Have a NDA (non-disclosure agreement) ready as it shows them you are serious about your product and you don’t really want them stealing it. They probably have existing manufacturers, so you have to convince them that you can do it better, or that since you’re first, you deserve a shot, then it’s negotiating “their cut”, usually a fee upfront, plus portion of sales.
FIND AN ATTORNEY that has experience negotiating this sort of contracts. Else you may get burned, either by yourself or by them. Go over the contract first with him.
